Transforming Outlive’s App Challenges into a Scalable Web Solution
Youth suicide prevention program by the Centre for Mental Health Law & Policy (CMHLP, ILS), reimagined as a Progressive Web App (PWA) for accessibility and reach.
What Did We Build?
We partnered with Outlive to move their support services beyond a mobile-only app and into a Progressive Web App (PWA) — accessible on any browser, device, or network condition.
To make this possible, we engineered a PWA architecture that feels like a native app, with offline capabilities and push notifications built in. We integrated secure, real-time chat so that volunteers and young people in crisis could connect instantly,
while also optimizing the platform for speed and scalability to handle high user loads without disruption. Most importantly, by removing app store dependencies, we eliminated barriers to access and made support just one click away from any browser. The result is a web-first solution that preserves the intimacy of one-on-one support while making suicide prevention resources more immediate, inclusive, and widely available.

From onboarding volunteers with ease to delivering secure, real-time conversations and ensuring strong privacy safeguards, each feature has been built to strengthen the way young people can access help when they need it most.
Seamless, Secure Access
Volunteers onboard quickly with email and activation codes. A new role-switching feature lets them step in during high demand, while password and display name changes ensure safety and anonymity.
Enhanced Chat Experience
Real-time chat with Socket.IO enables smooth communication. Volunteers get timely text or audio notifications, manage one chat at a time, and use session timers, resources, and consent-based transfers for quality support.
Reliable Data & Privacy
Outlive protects conversations with no chat history stored. Secure authentication and access controls strengthen safety, while chat analytics help monitor quality and resolve duplication issues without compromising privacy.
